According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), freeze-dried fruits contain antioxidant phytochemicals, such as anthocyanins, carotenoids, and ellagic acid, at levels near those found in fresh fruits. The AICR also states research studies indicate that the phytochemicals found in freeze-dried fruits can enter your blood stream. Their claims are based on research conducted by researcher Gary Stoner, Ph.D..
Dr. Stoner has conducted investigations that show that freeze-dried fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries may provide some protection against certain cancers, such as colon and esophageal, due to their phytochemicals. Does this mean you can solely rely on freeze-dried fruit to meet your 5-a-day fruit and veggie requirement? No, but they can be included in your diet as one of the ways to meet this goal.
It should be noted that freeze-dried fruits do tend to be lower in vitamins, such as vitamin C, that can breakdown easily. The best way to reap the benefits of freeze-dried fruits is to make them a part of a varied and balanced diet. The AICR notes that the minimal amount of freeze-dried fruit found in a serving of cereal or other similar products, is not enough to offer benefit. You need to consume 1/4 cup of freeze-dried fruit for it to count as a serving of fruit.
Besides offering health benefits, freeze-dried fruits are great staples to keep on hand because of their long shelf-life and portability for all-day outdoor excursions, such as hiking and biking trips. Freeze-dried fruit can be bought in bulk or in single serving bags.
